Following on from my horse on slate, I decided to create a hare in oil, on a slate tile. The slate is proving a very enjoyable base to work on…..back down the reclamation yard I went, ( new forest demolition). I could have come away with loads, but I had to consider storing in by small back garden, luckily for me they are only down the road, so I can pop in when I need more. I have named him Honister after the last working slate mine in Cumbria.

My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow.
I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel,inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use.
I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

Lots of life in this little face. He looks like he’s just seen a cat! I look for him to dart right off that slate in a minute! Lovely surface, Rebecca, really adds to the beauty of your also natural subject. He’s alive!

Thank you Laura, I think there will be quite a few more slates in the near future 😀…..talking of cats I have just been chasing a mouse around the house, a live gift this evening is not hugely appreciated, but I have caught and released the little wide eyed critter.

Nina it has impressed me so much that I just want to do so many more. The paint seems to behave a little differently to a canvas, and I love that. What medium do you use on the slate?

Usually gouache.

Oh brilliant, that’s great to know gouache works too, I think the only problem would be that the rain could wash it off, eek, but it would be quicker 😀

Thank you Charlie, I think I need to get back to some watercolour or pastels soon, it’s quite hard waiting for paint to dry when you are an impatient person, still oils are often worth the wait, so pleased you like the slate, I am planning on some wood soon, which will be different to the panelled wood I am also working on at the moment.

Only because it is getting late, and I just realised just how long I had been sat at the computer, doing not a lot really, lol . I’m wanting to paint my 3 cats, but am not sure how to depict the texture of fur. Your painting here is inspiring me to go ahead and give it a go.

So pleased this has inspired you. You should go for it and paint your three cats, it really is not difficult to paint fur, I would say the key is many layers, and a variety of shades, tones, built up slowly, and I use a variety of brushes, some are old brushes I have cut into, a flat brush, cutting bits off creates a more varied look to the traditional rake, or comb brush. I use the paint brush as if I was stroking the animal, so always go in the direction the hair grows, just like your hand on your pets fur would only stroke in one direction. And the most important thing is enjoy, it is my fav part, which can be so relaxing and meditative….although it means I sometimes loose concentration and go wrong, lol, because the layers are built up slowly, mistakes can be corrected 😀
