I have quite a few paintings left in a pile, they are my ‘gone wrong’ paintings, or is it that they didn’t go to plan? Either way, they are rejected….but maybe only for a few days. I really don’t like trashing these said painting, mainly because the cost of watercolour paper makes me want to recycle in some way. I have been known to wash the paint right off under the sink, this may leave a residue on the paper, but once dry, it does suit some paintings that follow this act. Sometimes I simply turn the paper over, and start a fresh. Lastly, and my preferred option, I see which other medium I can add, completely changing my intended look. My usual choice is ink, but in this instance my watercolour horse needed a softer more detailed tool to improve My mistakes. I pulled out some of my coloured pencils, polychromos-I have not used pencils in ages, they used to be my first go to medium. I really felt pleased that they helped me pull this horse back to something I was satisfied with. I am still not completely happy, but ‘My tea time’ is saved from the bin.

What a soft look that you were able to achieve. Man, the color is spot on and I really appreciate how you seem to know how much detail to show on the legs and hooves, down right perfect. Did you use pencil for that white spray? I never could get into colored pencils because I always felt like I couldn’t get the drama or the dark I wanted. Beautiful work, Becky!

I actually used the watercolour for the spray, then a second spray after the pencil was added. I did like the use of the pencil on the legs, in fact it’s the only part I was truly happy with. You are quite right, it does leave a surprisingly soft look. I plan to do some more coloured pencil work soon. 😀

Oh Becky what a salvage! I love him what a beautiful horse wonderful work! I used to work with pencils and now I use them once in a while they do add softness I want to try them again sometimes! I love all your horses! ❤

Thank you so much, years ago I only ever worked in pencil, then just stopped completely, a few years ago I decided to try painting instead, never thought of combining pencil with WC before, no idea why as I combine everything else I can think of that I own, planning on getting some more polychromos as I need a broader selection of Browns 😀

Oh my gosh! Reading above description and looking at the results you are a true genius Becky 😍 by the way how do you spray with color pencil? So sorry if this is a dumb question but at the same time I’m curious to know!

Thank you Snehal, I did the main spray when it was watercolour, liked the effect so after I added the pencil I decided to re do some more spray on top of the pencil…I didn’t know if it would work due to the oil in the polychromos but it did, soaked in great…can’t wait to get some more pencils, to add to my small collection, plan to do a few more coloured pencil pieces this week…I’m on holiday 😀 that’s riding the ponies and painting ‘ the best times’
