This weekend I have been playing with inks, but for a change I have used water soluble, rather than the carbon water resistant ink, let’s just say, I got very inky fingers. It was a lot of fun, but quite hard to control, I did add a little watercolour, and I needed to add some white, as I had unfortunately lost some of the tonal values, a little unfortunate that I needed to do that but heyho, we learn with each new medium. I used my lamy Safari pen and quink ink, on the ‘9 carat kisses’ I added some pastel on top of the ink.
The horse was done with a different ink ( one encased in a pen) the elegant writer, brown, I would love if speedball made pots of this lush ink in brown and black, but sadly they don’t( they do make a black ink but it is not the same as in the pens)so the only way to achieve this is by purchasing the pen itself. I do love the back elegant writer best, but the brown is not far behind.

You are a brave one…..ink scares the crap out me! Though I do love working with sumi ink, I take it back a little. In each one I like something different, I especially love the blending edges on your horse. The giggles on the first, the more serious look on the second portrait, the eyes on the third. Oh and that edge of the hair on the third on the left side, love that! I can’t wait to see more…..

Thank you Margaret, each was fun, and the ink goes on well re hotpress, but harder to create a great effect when adding water, because it is water soluble it left a very dark look, so I just went with that style, it’s a problem when the pen works well on hotpress, and the blending better on coldpress, something in between would be great 😀. The bleeding on the horse painting is all down to the wonderful elegant writer pen, super little pens❤️

I bet if you were to experiment with different papers, you might find the right texture that would work perfectly. I wished that you could try Saunders…..I am in love. Fabriano would be jealous but hey, I can change my lovers (paper! lol) often. 😉

Oh I do like Saunders, I have a few v large sheets that I have cut down, I love arches and Saunders…I think I need to try one of these brands of hotpress for comparison …..our local art shop closed and keep having little art sales in the community centre, selling off the left over stock, so I bought a selection of toned watercolour paper, that should be interesting, I should have bought some arches hotpress, duh!

Thank you Snehal, I keep meaning to take stages of progress photos, actually just posted a very small progress of a painting photos, I don’t have the means to video, but I will try harder to photograph my stages 😀

‘Giggles’ is actually giggling – such a fab capture of a difficult expression! Really like the lines in the hair too, a very happy portrait 🙂 A great selection all round though, the horse is a beauty!
