So I really wanted to try the aquabord, by ampersand, it sounds amazing, but expensive, so I tried to create my own,( I made some claybord, following a recipie I found online, it works ok). But the aquabord was not as much of a success-I decided to find a paint that is water loving…absorbing ( I know Daniel smith does a watercolour ground, I have it, but wanted something with a different effect) so according to the Internet, anti condensation paint absorbs moisture, my light bulb flashed on, worth a go?? So I obtained a small pot of paint, and a few A4 hardboard panels I already had, I was off, left to dry over night, voila, it looked good, so after a few tests, it did take the watercolour paint, and it does wash off clean too, just like the aquabord, but the watercolour paint is not vibrant, and it is hard work to get coverage. I will use the panels I made, but I think I will invest in the real thing.
This is Chico on my hardboard, coated in anti condensation paint, then watercolour, I also spray fixed it when finished, just in case it is not stable. The other picture is a quick study of Chico in a multi coloured pencil.

your board looks good; and such beautiful horses Rebecca! discoveries on www can be fun, infuriating, futile and Fab -u- Lous!!! its a hit and miss, roll the dice thing… but worth a shot – just to see What Happens. š good for you for experimenting!!

True, sometimes I spend more time experimenting than painting? I decided yesterday to stop and paint more productively, so be an by finishing the multitude of unfinished paintings sat around the room, oil, watercolour,pastel, there is so many I need to complete, that I had forgotten about, lol

I agree, good for you for trying it, we never know if it might work! I need to call you mad scientist too hehe! Gosh your horses are incredible. The top one in particular, may have been a test experiment but wow, so beautiful. And I know how tough horses are! Well done, my friend and thanks for sharing your results.

Yes, I have that scientist bug too, just get carried away at times. At least it does take watercolour, I have a few more panels to use up.

The pencil sketch is beautiful and the watercolour on the prepared hardboard is fantastic. Love the textural effects and muted colors…really lovely.

Yes the muted colours do work ok, although if the experiment had worked better, the colours should have been more vibrantš

Thanks for the good tip. I love Aquabord…I also have Cold Press Ground, but I haven’t used it yet. I will know now not to give this one a try, although your horse is still a beauty.
