My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow.
I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel,inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use.
I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

Thank you Charlie, he he, it’s a question of who will run first?…..bang! Which direction to go, and where to meet up again? If only that was all there was to worry about in life…I might just come back as a hare.

Beautiful and charming as ever; with such alertness in the eyes, it does indeed make you wonder what the conversation is. I love how the tall grasses ‘frame’ the hares almost.

Well the hare has to watch out for the tortoise! Maybe that’s why he’s looking both ways. I see this as the same hare in two different positions.

Ha ha, I like it, the tortoise, ….maybe I should paint a tortoise next, I had never really thought of doing that, and I loved that story as a child.

I do love your hares! How do you decide which medium you’re going to work in? Is it just what you fancy, or do you have certain preferences based on what you’re painting?

Thank you Vicki, I go through stages, so it really depends on which medium is out at the time, sometimes I think a picture would look better in a certain medium, though if that is the case it would have to wait until I have finished ( got bored) of the mediums out on the table. I am into oils again at the moment, so much slower process, I do however pull out other mediums to do during oil drying times….I guess I rotate between, watercolour, oil, pastel, the most, I love the neocolors too, but have not had them out in a while, oh and of course combining for a mixed media, is always fun….not worked in Indian ink or charcoal in a while, so I might drag that stuff out again soon. ( trying to build up some items for Hampshire open studios, so mainly watercolour, oil, as I think people prefer, or understand these more, nothing against acrylic, I just prefer oil).

Ha! That’s what I do – rotate! What are neocolours? I can’t imagine sticking to one subject/one medium for an extended period of time (though sometimes I wish I would be satisfied with this, as I realise people ‘get’ you quicker if they can see in one go what you’re about). Whereas I’m all over the place. As in life, really!
I’ve not really used ink too much, apart from some drawing inks, but I was transfixed by some you tube yesterday where someone was using Bombay and Hydrus (?) inks….I probably should own an art supply shop. Gazing at all the possibilities would make me very happy indeed!

Ohhh Bombay, are lush, I don’t own any, but have looked at them on numerous occasions, I have a few hydrus, which my daughter bought me for Christmas, the colours are amazingly vibrant…in fact I think I did use the green I have in this hare painting for some of the foliage, I did it such a time ago I had forgotten, but you have reminded me. Caran dache neocolors, are amazing they are like a crayon, but better, very creamy, vibrant colours, which are water soluble, they are pretty versatile, as you can use like a watercolour, they blend well, have a great colour range, and actually last a long time, which is helpful as they are not cheap, I have the full range, but to budget I just bought five individuals each week, you should buy a couple to try, it started with me when I bought a white, to use for animal whiskers, that was it hooked. 😀

Mmmm, the neo ‘s sound lovely, might have to consider some of them and some fancy ink. Need to do some more ink research I think!
