Another oil painting finished. When I started this one, I did not plan it out very well, I put the horse too low down on the canvas. I ended up quite liking the colours and the only thing I could think of doing was to make the horse look like it was splashing through the water, I’m not the best at water as you can see, but I like the horse.

My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow.
I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel,inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use.
I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

I like the horse too and the way you used the strokes at the bottom really adds to the depth and movement of the horse’s head. Well done, even if unplanned!

Sometimes unplanned is good, with this one I just wish I had put a little more thought into it, I guess that’s the way it goes sometimes. I did however really enjoy painting this one.

Lovely work! Water, mist, or mystery down at the bottom, it don’t really matter, you have created the feeling that the horse is coming forward and out of something sort of dreamy. I like the composition. Yay for you and for happy accidents.

Thank you Jill, it was mist, then water, but truly it is whatever the viewer wants it to be. Thank you for following me, I had a quick look at your blog, which is so inspirational, I will take a closer look later, but just off to get the ponies stabled for the night…it’s going to rain again here in the uk.

Thanks Cathe, it is so pleasing when something not too well planned turns out to be ok in the end. The beauty of oil I guess…shame I couldn’t have moved it up the canvas a bit more.

This is incredible, Rebecca. I wouldn’t wanna change one thing about it. Love the pink glow at the top and the cool textures and fade out at the bottom. I just love this piece!!!

Thank you, when I mixed this colour, I went overboard and put it on everything lol, toned it down a little on this, with the blue/ grey. Why is it so easy to fall in love with some colours? I am loving your magenta and yellow ( must remember that colour combo for the future)

I love it, I think it really makes it pop. Not a color you expect to see but it is so … can’t describe. It grabs you but not too hard. It shines but looks cohesive. Just the right amount of ooh but not like ick it doesn’t fit. Sorry my tired brain is not making sense this AM lol! It’s beautiful! I think you mixed too much for a reason!

Happy accident indeed! I agree with others: a very misty, ethereal look to the water, which works wonderfully. Together with the pose and the contemplative and rather sombre look in his eye, a very thought-provoking image.

Hi Debi, thank you, I am at a yard in the new forest, so we have many different horses that livery, Andalusian, Welsh, Icelandic, warmblood, quarter horse, Irish, TB, plus other breeds. I have two new forests and a coloured cob. Of course new forest ponies are everywhere grazing on the ancient common land, although wild, they are all in fact owned by ‘commoners’ who have forest rights, this right is complicated, it is attached to properties purchased within the forest ( not every property) often rights are handed down in families. The ponies are all branded, and are round up each year, foals removed, if needed, ponies wormed, if possible, new foals branded if being kept, and ponies tail marked to their agisters area, to show they have been checked ( and paid for year on forest which is not much, but some commoners have hundreds of ponies out on the forest). I don’t blog much about the horses, I guess because it is normal everyday life for me. All my friends have horses, many breed types and many keep them at their own homes, some breed( Appaloosa, cob, Arabs, or others), some event, some are large pets! For me hacking on the open forest is just wonderful, we live in a beautiful place, that I never bore of 😀…maybe the odd local competition?

oh my gosh! that is so interesting…I’d have been in heaven as a kid, if I could have had a wild pony roaming my land! 🙂 I’m really familiar with Quarter Horse and Arabs, Welsh and love the Andalusian looks!
