This was so much fun, watercolour and then lots of soft pastel. This is painted on daler rowney mixed media, it is lovely thick card, with a bit of texture, so it holds the pastel well, not so good for the watercolour, but it was ok for the base painting. This lovely bird was found on paint my photo, I admired his pose straight away. Cock sure!

My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow.
I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel,inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use.
I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

Thank you Sophia, so pleased you like it, I was intending for a more rugged, non perfect style, with gestures of colour thrown in, and I was happy with the result….wish I had done it on WC paper now.

How did the charity auction go?

Hi ya, our hospice charity auction is in August, so a little while to go yet, the paintings needed to be handed in so they can be catalogued, photographed, and put in the brochure. The other charity auction ( secret auction) for MS society goes live on I think the 9 th or 11 th April, that is online based….I cannot disclose the painting I have submitted for that one…its secret!

They are such strange birds, huge attitude, and pretty darn prehistoric looking. We have a rooster at the yard, and if he sees anyone heading towards HIS hen, he rushes over flapping them to get away ( people that is) that’s chicken love!

Cocksure couldn’t be more accurate – what a character! Lovely pastel work Rebecca, smooth feathers and a perfectly vigorous background – the similar colours make him appear larger than life (which is *totally* what he wants!) I’ve long wanted a cockerel; they’re so impressive. However, I feel the neighbours would soon grow tired of the new alarm clock!

Mmmm, the only silencer I know that your neighbours might employ, is mr fox! Seriously though, many people keep chickens successfully in their back gardens, there are many items to purchase for such keepers of poultry, some great hen houses, oh and fresh eggs every day, they taste much better than shop ones, and the chickens love scraps from the kitchen.

Oh, I have three hens, just no cockerels! Couldn’t agree more – the eggs are a delight. And they’re such strong and amusing characters.

Aww lucky you, do they all have names? we only have one cockerel, and one hen left at the yard…mr fox got one of the ducks last week, so poor mr duck was all alone, but he now has a new mate, a beautiful brown lady quack. More hens hopefully this summer, fingers crossed.

Quite an old shot, in fact this was just a couple of days after rescuing them, but it shows all three, enjoying their new-found freedom and setting about their destruction of the garden! From the front to back: Marge, Alice (the boss), and Babs. They are girls not to be messed with! I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been chased down the garden path 😉

Usually A3 is the smallest, I do however have a couple of A4 ish blocks of watercolour, so when the A3 blocks are in use, I grab the small one to start afresh. With canvases I also prefer A3, but lately I have done some smaller work, creating some charity auction pieces….also square, which I struggle with, ms society, was cd size ( 12×12 I think) our hospice was 20x20cm, needless to say it was a challenge to down size! If I buy loose sheets of expensive watercolour, I cut it down to half size, due to cost, and lack of desk space ….although I have painted larger on the living room floor in the past, and it is not comfortable.
