Re kindled love of oils

With the approach of our local hospice fundraising art auction, I have had the oil paints out to complete a canvas, having mainly used watercolours over the last year, it was a struggle to get back into the gloopy stuff. To begin with,I almost quit before giving them a chance, but after the second / third layer of paint I found the images started to resemble what I had intended. Phew I have re found my love for them. Here are the four I have finished. I had eight on the go, all at different points in progress, the others still have a way to go, and are drying for a few days before the next layers can be applied. In fact I am enjoying so much I have bought some new  oil brushes, and some more canvases.( I would love to do a huge oil painting, but I just don’t have the space) …………I just wish I could dedicate a room to painting, as my living room stinks now and oil is quite messy, at least I have a fold away table.

About REcreate-RebeccaEvansCreate

My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow. I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel, inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use. I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

I really like all of them, but I am a big fan of rabbits and hares, and the top one is simply gorgeous-I feel like I am looking into the animal’s heart and soul-Beautiful work-and what a wonderful gift for your hospice organization-good luck with the auction!

    • Thank you, I love the hare too, so much I have him on the wall….I think the hospice will be getting my other hare face…not on this blog post….but it could be another one which I am currently painting, it is a great cause, and so mush fun being a part of the auction.

  6. I love the first hare in particular too but the robin is also wonderful and they are all very well done, Rebecca! I admire people who can excel in all types of media. You go, girl!

    • Thank you Laura, have you tried oil yet? It is a very forgiving medium….it s only low points are smell, terrible mess if it gets somewhere it shouldn’t ( and slow process….in brackets as this can be an advantage) mixing colours is so easy, as a little goes a long way I think just the primary colours are ample, plus white and black, then a thinner is required, and an oil…I use liquid fine detail. I think many people avoid oils, but they are easier to manage compared to acrylic in my opinion. Give it a go, if you can some time, I know you enjoy mixing up the mediums too.

Lucky Mum. Mine is getting a bottle of Gin! Of course. Your art work lends itself to greetings cards. I hope you don’t mind me saying that. The robin would be a lovely Christmas card.

    • Thank you, I don’t mind you saying, in fact it is very flattering to hear. I am looking at possibly getting some prints done, but you need money to make money, and I am a bit stuck and scared of which way to go with this painting hobby. I have investigated through some local printers, but I am not sure that the quality is good enough, possibly I need to look at bigger companies that specialise in the task? It would be a dream to dedicate full time to painting, but I am crap at selling, because I just don’t do it!! Only friends and family have bought my paintings( or charity auctions). 😀

Oils are a great medium to work with but sadly, I don’t have space to work with them so I go with acrylics instead. One day, though. I hope you can find a way to sell greeting cards using prints of your work. There are so many great ways to put your work out there and I am sure that you will find something that works with your time, energy and startup budget. Best wishes. ❤

  11. Thank you, I am still looking into options, nerves get in the way,or finances prevent? I will get over my personal barriers, on the plus, donating paintings for charity is a huge boost, and I hope will help me on my journey to eventually sell. I only have a small space, I pop up a folding table in my living room to paint. The drying is more of a problem, so I have been using smaller canvases, then they take over my downstairs toilet for drying.

    • Thank you Debi, I have grown quite fond of him, sat on my shelf, watching my every move. The oil is such a fab medium, if it wasn’t for the waiting to dry, I guess it does make you slow down, think, contemplate, and make every brush stroke count. Between layers, watching a painting grow and bloom is quite therapeutic. At the beginning I am, errrr?? ( scrunched nose),Second layer, ummm ( slanty head), third layer, ohhhhh! ( raise eyebrows, nod head) ………multiple minor adjustments tweaks here and there, when do you decide it really is finished? Lol
