My first attempt at a watercolour figure and elegant writer

I set myself the challenge to paint a figure, I have been avoiding the challenge I set myself for a while now, in fact the last figure I drew was at school ( over 25 years ago) although it went ok back then ( it did look like the model- at least I thought so) I really did not enjoy the experience, I found it stressful, in that there is a huge amount of pressure to create something that resembles someone you know. Plus teachers back then were very critical, and you were expected to do things in the style they required, not what you saw artistically.

so for my challenge I used a pose of someone I know ( photograph) I wanted a side on face, as I thought this would make it an easier step back into figure painting? ?? And lots of shadow and dark, which in hind sight was not a good choice, as I have not painted it as dark as the photo, so it was hard to see shape detail. Well we are always learning I guess.

Watercolour and elegant writer figure painting

I used my technique previously posted for the background, of watercolour and alcohol flicked in, with the addition of some gold paint ( a bit of bling)! I used the elegant writer for the outlines, plus pinks and watercolour in a mix of browns, and blue shades. Painted on 140 lb Langton cold pressed.

this has to be my biggest achievement this year, and I really enjoyed painting this one.

About REcreate-RebeccaEvansCreate

My name is Rebecca Evans, living in the New Forest I have been inspired to paint the many animals often seen around me. Having ridden since Childhood, painting equines was a natural path to follow. I use a variety of media, watercolour, oil, charcoal, pastel, inks, plus a few more, infact I will try most things. Choosing the medium to work with can really change the effect of the art, and therefore the character of the animal. Sometimes it is an instant decision, sometimes it is the mood from within me which determines which medium I choose to use. I never know what might inspire me next, but if it’s hairy, I will be sure to try.

  1. Nice job, and thanks again for sharing your process. Love the head and hair best, I think! Will you be doing more? I haven’t even attempted a WC portrait. I feel like it would make mincemeat of me.

  2. Hi Laura, thank you, I thought the same about figures, but really pleased I gave it a go. I will try some more, as I really wanted to do a ballerina, but decided that was too much too soon, having now had a go, I think I will attempt her. There are some great reference photos available on paint my photo,- pmp-art.com although I have not painted any from there yet, I have had a good browse, I will probably find some figures there to try out.

  5. Thank you, my fav colours of the moment, every thing over the last few days has been in this colour palette. I might experiment with yellow and brown next, so many delicious colours to choose and mix, it’s like a sweet shop to me.
